It's getting more expensive to waste

Prices haven't come back down, so the same habits cost more every year.

Questions people ask

How much food does the average family of four throw away?

For a typical family cart (eggs, milk, yogurt, cheese, chicken, beef, fruit, vegetables, bread, cereal, pasta, frozen meals, snacks, sweets and juice), about $1,254 a year, or $104 a month. Pick your own foods above to see your number.

How much money does a household waste on food?

Across all 66 foods in this calculator, the average American leaves about $475 of food uneaten each year, so a family of four tosses around $1,900. That's at today's national average prices.

Which foods get wasted the most?

By share left uneaten at home, USDA's estimates put clementines (52%), cherries (51%), radishes (47%), kiwi (45%), lemons (44%) near the top. By dollars, meat usually leads because it costs the most per pound.

Does food waste matter for the climate?

Yes. Food that's thrown away still had to be grown, shipped and kept cold. For the typical family cart, the uneaten food adds up to about 2,480 kg of CO₂e a year, about the same as driving 6,199 miles.

How can I waste less food?

Buy closer to what you actually use, put the things that turn fastest at the front, freeze what you won't get to, and plan meals around what needs using. Haivenly does that tracking for you from your grocery receipts.

How we calculate this

No guesswork here. For each food, we start with how much the average American buys in a year and USDA's estimate of how much of it goes uneaten at home. Then we multiply by the people in your home and the national average price.

yearly cost = pounds per person × people × price per pound × share uneaten
